THE SCULPTURE

A monumental form, reimagined.

THORAK is a limited-edition bronze miniature inspired by Josef Thorak's monumental horse sculptures.

The sculpture translates the presence and character of the original work into a carefully proportioned object designed to be displayed, studied and preserved.

At approximately 35 cm high, the miniature is intended to retain the essential silhouette, movement and proportions of the monumental form while making it suitable for private collections.

THE HISTORY

From monument
to rediscovery.

The story of Thorak's horses is inseparable from the architecture, politics and visual culture of Berlin in the late 1930s and early 1940s.

Josef Thorak

Josef Thorak was an Austrian-German sculptor known for monumental works and large-scale bronze and stone sculpture. During the Third Reich he became one of the period's most prominent and publicly commissioned sculptors.

The Monumental Horses

Thorak created the monumental horse sculptures in 1939. Two bronze casts were subsequently placed at the garden terrace of the Neue Reichskanzlei in Berlin, where they formed part of the architectural and visual programme of the Third Reich.

After 1945

Following the war and the destruction of the Reichskanzlei, the horses disappeared from public view. They were later found on the grounds of a Soviet military installation in Eberswalde, where they remained for decades.

Rediscovered

The two monumental bronzes were rediscovered in 2015 during an investigation into missing works from the period. Their recovery brought renewed attention to Thorak's work and to the complicated history of monumental art created during the Third Reich.

Ars Vetera is developing a limited bronze edition for collectors who value sculpture, history and enduring objects.

Each sculpture is intended to be individually numbered and accompanied by documentation of the edition.

The miniature is approximately 35 cm high, representing roughly a 1:10 scale of the monumental form.
